Live Consciously through
holism! Holism recognises that all life is interdependent and
connected - interconnectedness. The Whole is a sum of its
parts. Holism also recognises that through self-reflection
(understanding the Self) can we truly understand another. The
world is a creation of all the choices of all the people. By
changing your life through small little steps - you inevitably
change the Whole. This is your Power!
Remember, don't
feel pressured to get involved politically - the most
important thing one can do is to live
consciously by making small changes in your own
life as well as raising your awareness of what is occurring in
the greater world - for you are irrevocably connected!

| Film of the Month - 638 Ways to
Kill Castro |
|
Insight into America's
own terrorist activities
638 Ways
to Kill Castro tells the story of some of the numerous
attempts to kill Cuba's leader Fidel
Castro.
The film reveals multiple methods of assassination,
from exploding cigars to femme
fatales; a radio station rigged with
noxious gas to a poison
syringe posing as an innocuous ballpoint pen.
The former head of Cuban Intelligence alleges that there
were over 600 plots dreamt up to end the life of the
"red menace".
On the trail of Castro's would-be killers, the
filmmakers meet a series of would-be assassins - several
are also accused terrorists, still living in
America. All these men, the film reveals, were
supported and funded by the United
States. At one point, staggeringly, the CIA
even sought the help of the Mafia in
the hope they would be able to succeed where so many
others had failed.
The sub-text of the film is a comment on the
contemporary War on Terrorism -
acknowledged terrorists who have made common cause with
the CIA in the past live happily in the United States,
but individuals with often very sketchy connections with
latter-day terrorism have ended up incarcerated without
trial at Guantanamo Bay.

Humanitarian Focus - Human
Trafficking |
|
|
What exactly is
it?
The
trafficking of human beings is the recruitment,
transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of
people for the purpose of exploitation. Trafficking
involves a process of using illicit means such as
threat, use of force, or other forms of coercion, of
abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power
or of a position of vulnerability.
Exploitation
includes forcing people into prostitution or other forms
of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services,
slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or
the removal of organs. For children exploitation may
include also, illicit international adoption,
trafficking for early marriage, recruitment as child
soldiers, for begging or for sports (such as child camel
jockeys or football players), or for recruitment for
religious cults.
Amnesty International,
Anti-Slavery International,
London-based feminist charity Eaves and
Unicef UK have
partnered with Panos Pictures to
produce a thought-provoking exhibition of photographs
highlighting the lives and landscapes of people
trafficked into the UK.

Floods |
|
| Burning fossil fuels has changed the pattern of
rainfall in the UK
The Red Cross is
stretched to their limits, in Tewkesbury. Thousands of
people previously living in Gloucestershire's rolling
hills suddenly find themselves homeless. A third of a
million people have no drinking water.
For the first time, a scientific paper to be
published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature will make it official:
Human-induced climate change, it says, is responsible
for heavier and more intense rainfall in the UK. This
month's unprecedented floods are exactly the kind of
weather event predicted by global warming models. And
increases in greenhouse gas emissions are likely to
bring more increases in future rainfall.
The paper, based on 14 different climate models,
confirms that mid-latitude regions like Europe, Canada
and Russia are experiencing more rainfall, and that this
increase bears the "human fingerprint". According to the
Times: "For the European region that includes Britain,
the research team estimates that human activity has
accounted for about two thirds of the observed
trend."

Book of the Month - The
Islamist |

"Why I
Joined Radical Islam in Britain, What I Saw Inside and
Why I Left"
"When I was sixteen I became an Islamic
fundamentalist. Five years later, after much emotional
turmoil, I rejected fundamentalist teachings and
returned to normal life and my family. I tried to put my
experiences behind me, but as the events of 7/7 unfolded
it became clear to me that Islamist groups pose a threat
to this country that we - Muslims and non-Muslims alike
- do not yet understand.
Why are young British Muslims becoming extremists?
What are the risks of another home-grown terrorist
attack on British soil? By describing my experiences
inside these groups, the reasons I joined them and how,
after leaving I recovered my faith and mind, I hope to
explain the appeal of extremist thought, how fanatics
penetrate Muslim communities and the truth behind their
agenda of subverting the West and moderate Islam.
Writing candidly about life after extremism, I
illustrate the depth of the problem that now grips
Muslim hearts and minds. I will lay bare what
politicians and Muslim 'community leaders' do not want
you to know. This is the first time an ex-member openly
discusses life within radical Islamic organisations.
This is my story."
Captivating, and terrifyingly honest
... a wake-up call to monocultural Britain, it takes
you into the mind of young fundamentalists, exposing
places in which the old notion of being British is
defunct.

Your Power! Microsoft
responds regarding practices in China
A Conscious Living reader writes to
Microsoft regarding their concern about the company's
practices in China - which is known for its censorship
of internet material and imprisonment of individuals who
disobey these rules.
Together with Amnesty International, this
individual calls for Microsoft to use its huge influence
to promote ethical practices in the industry so that
they are mirrored and replicated by others in the field.
Although directed to Bill Gates, Microsoft's senior
director in the US replies with this detailed
letter.
